Sea salt processing: evaporation to increase the production of salt.

The customer
The Client is a small company of a Northern Sea island which produces high-quality salt both for food and healthcare purposes. History says that this type of activity belongs to this Region since the Middle Ages. In 1991 it was recovered for educational purposes by the local school but now the company brings forward an organized production and business activity.

The customer’s needs
The Client is recovering salt from seawater using traditional practice. The salt is made by seething, a process where the saline groundwater is heated in large iron pans until the salt crystallizes. Their goal was to increase their productivity while continuing to maintain part of traditional production processes.

The solution provided
The solution to achieve this goal is a vacuum evaporator type Evaled PC F 4 made in super duplex stainless steel, having a distillate production capacity of 4 m3/day and a footprint of 3.2 m2.
PC F series is the line of heat pump evaporators designed to treat liquids with a high content of dissolved solids while minimizing fouling and scaling phenomena at low-temperature evaporation. They produce maximum distillate quality with minimum capital and operating costs and are compact skid-mounted units, simple, safe, and easy to move.

Control is by a PLC, including the functions of feed and discharge, which allows automatic operation and minimum supervision. All models are designed for continuous operation, 24h/day, and require just electrical supply and compressed air. 

The evaporator is remotely controlled and monitored through the HUBGRADE digital platform. Considering the particular installation site, an island difficult to reach, the remote monitoring of the evaporator allows for a significantly easier management of the system.

The results:

  • The concentrate has the NaCl required. The solution perfectly satisfies the customer’s requests. The concentrate is obtained with a saline content suitable for proceeding with the traditional evaporation process.
  • A short payback period.
  • Easier management of the unit.
