Smelting of aluminum: the ZLD made possible by the evaporation technology.

The customer
The customer is a multinational company global leader in lightweight metals engineering and manufacturing and is also one of the most respected global engineering, project management, and construction companies in the industrial sector.

Goals
The company aimed to install an environmentally conscious plant alongside a glacier-fed fjord.  Thanks to a closed collaboration with a leader in Design & Build, the result is a zero-waste-to-landfill project among the most environmentally sustainable facilities of its kind.
Ultimately, more than 90 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills and no processed water was discharged into the nearby fjord.

The solution provided
The EVALED solution included in the project to achieve this important goal has a first step to drastically reduce the initial volume of wastewater: a vacuum evaporator type EVALED RV F 60 made in superduplex stainless steel, having a distillate production capacity of 60 m3/day and a footprint of 20.9 m2.

The ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) required by the project is finally accomplished  by the second evaporation step:a vacuum scraped evaporator type EVALED AC R 3 in superduplex stainless steel, having a distillate production capacity of 3 m3/day and a footprint of 6.6 m2.

AC R is the series of hot/cold water evaporators/crystallizers with scraped heat exchanger
surface. The series is designed to treat wastewater containing a high concentration of suspended and dissolved solids and, for this reason, they are always the right choice when a second step of further concentration is needed.

The results:

  • A Zero Liquid Discharge plant
  • Wastewater disposal cost reduction thanks to a concentration factor of over 33 times
  • 97% water recovery and recycling into the process
